Orange Shirt Day (OSD) is September 30, recognized as a stat holiday to recognize the legacy of the Canadian residential school system. It is also known as National Day for Truth & Reconciliation. Tikinagan’s OSD Planning Committee invites you to read this post so you can:

  • order your OSD t-shirt;
  • participate by honouring your healing journey and others, and/or continue to commit to reconciliation;
  • learn about our children and youth engagement activities
  • save the date for our all-staff exhibition and event on September 29

Tikinagan / Foster Parents Staff Exhibition

We are asking staff and Foster Parents to share their healing journey as Indigenous peoples, or ways you will support Indigenous healing and reconciliation. You can submit stories, art, writings, a video, an audio recording, or photos that captures your journey, the story of a family member or Elder, or thoughts on residential schools/healing/reconciliation. You can also share a link, a YouTube video, or anything else that would be related. These can be submitted anonymously or can include your name(s). From your submissions, we will create an online exhibition (similar to the Tikinagan Weekly) for staff/foster parents to view and experience your stories.  Please send your submission to communications@tikinagan.org by September 27.

Staff Event, September 29 – SAVE THE DATE!

On September 29, all staff and foster parents are invited to attend a sharing circle and hear special guest speaker, author Dr. Eduardo Duran, who will discuss healing β€œsoul wounds” and intergenerational trauma. The event starts at 12:30PM to 4 PM Central Time. Teams invite to follow later. Along with your orange apparel, you are encouraged to wear a skirt/dress.

Orange Shirt Day T-Shirts, Window Stickers & Magnets

This year, staff and foster parents will receive an orange shirt day t-shirt (up to 500 orders). To order yours, please click here. There is no cost and they will shipped a week prior to OSD. Deadline to order is September 20. Also, orders will include a window sticker and magnet ordered from Indigenartsy.com. To show your support for these items you will receive, everyone is welcome to make a donation to the Orange Shirt Society here.

Children & Youth Activities

Children: This year, we will be ordering 500 copies of the audiobook, Phyllis’ Orange Shirt, for staff children and children in care. Additional copies may be made available to the public. You can preview the book here. Audio book access details to follow.

Youth: We are asking youth to share their β€œhealing” music playlists on social media, featuring songs that bring them healing or help them process tough emotions and feelings like a sadness, loneliness, fun, and happiness. Youth will be invited to share their screen grabs via iTunes, Spotify, or YouTube and share to social media using the hashtag #ICommitOSD. For every playlist that is shared, Tikinagan will donate $2 to the Orange Shirt Society.
