Mamow Oshki-Pimagihowin – “Working together to learn new life skills”
The Prevention Program is made up of a central Sioux Lookout-based unit and community-based Prevention Coordinators. We work to:
- develop and host activities, workshops and programs
- connect families and children to community resources
What does Prevention at Tikinagan look like?
Prenatal, Infancy and Early Years Programs:
- Prenatal care and education
- Baby basics
- Parent-child programs
- Toys and book lending libraries
Children’s Programs:
- Breakfast for learning
- After-school programs
- Organized sports
- Day camps and summer camps
Youth Programs:
- Land-based and traditional training
- Healthy lifestyle and life-skills training
- Recreation and activity programs
- Suicide awareness and prevention
Parent and Family Programs:
- Parenting education and caregiver training
- Homemaking skills
- Parent support
Community Programs:
- Basic needs support (food banks, clothing cupboards, etc)
- Resource libraries
- Traditional programs
- Community gatherings
- Community enhancement (cleanups, construction projects)
We operate under a service model called Mamow Obiki-ahwahsoowin, which means ‘everyone working together to raise our children.’ In the true spirit of Mamow Obiki-ahwahsoowin, we love to collaborate with other community services!
