Tikinagan’s statement on AFN Chiefs’ decision about draft Final Settlement Agreement on Long-Term Reform of the First Nations Child and Family Services Program

40 years of recognizing community responsibility for child protection as an essential aspect of both Indigenous self-government and Mamow Obiki-ahwahsoowin‌‍‍‌

We want to recognize the work and dedication of all parties in regards to the Draft Final Settlement Agreement on Long-Term Reform of the First Nations Child and Family Services Program. We want to thank the First Nations Caring Society for standing up for our children by going to the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal and continuing to advocate for all children across the country. We appreciate everyone who is working together to create transformational change for our communities and end discrimination against our First Nations children.

Guided by our First Nations mandate, Tikinagan remains committed to working together with our First Nations. We have always believed and still believe the answer lies within the community. Community responsibility for child protection is an essential aspect of Indigenous self-government, which is a key aspect of Mamow Obiki-ahwahsoowin.
