Foster parents provide a nurturing safe home for foster children, many of whom have had upsetting or traumatic experiences in their lives. Foster parents tend to the physical and emotional needs of the children. They provide nourishing meals, a warm place to sleep, a comfortable happy place to live, safe from harm. They listen. They love. They try to understand.

Many children need emotional support or counselling. Foster parents work with Tikinagan's team to ensure the child's Plan of Care is carried out, including emotional care.

Most children need consistency in their lives - clear expectations, regular bed-times, reasonable limits for the child's age. They might need foster parents to help them learn how a healthy family interacts with one another, how to behave responsibly.

Foster parents do a lot of things for a child. Much depends on the individual child's needs. But much is just healthy role modelling and compassion for a child whose life might be in turmoil.
